7 Restaurants In BALI That Serve SUPERFOOD For A Super Life!
The notion that certain foods have higher nutritional value than others is hardly new – but the categorisation, ‘superfood’ is a relatively recent phenomenon, perhaps reflecting a world-wide trend towards healthier eating habits. The superfood group generally includes natural, nutritionally dense food like berries, salmon, nuts and cacao which are vibrant, low in calories, high in antioxidants and packed with vitamins and minerals.

t is said that we are what we eat, which of course isn’t entirely accurate, but it is a good place to start. While some may dismiss the notion of superfood as a fad/or marketing jargon, there is no denying that a good healthy diet that is low in sugar and processed fats, and high in fruits, vegetables and lean protein, will help maintain weight, fight disease and make you live longer. It will also make you feel great. That doesn’t mean to say that you have to eat superfood exclusively, but adding more nutrient rich food to your diet, combined with regular exercise and a healthy lifestyle can only enhance the quality of your life.

The way food is prepared also affects its health giving properties – for instance, it’s better to eat your spinach raw, or lightly steamed so as to retain nutrients, as opposed to having it battered and deep fried into a tempura. Similarly, while eating a Mars Bar may give you some of the benefits of chocolate – these are pretty much outweighed by chemical processing, high amounts of sugars and artificial preservatives. Unfortunately many companies merely use the term as a branding slogan to boost sales, and if a packaged item lists sugar, preservatives and colourings it has already dropped way down the nutritional scale. On the other hand, buying organic, free range products and eating them raw, poached, steamed or grilled is the best way to preserve the nutritional integrity of food.

When it comes to eating out in Bali, most restaurants have some kind of superfood on the menu – including salads and fresh juices, but those that offer healthy whole foods are the best place to go looking for the ultimate superfood fix. Our top picks include Watercress, Alchemy, Glow, Zula, Bali Buda, Kafe, Clear, Soma, Desa Seni, Divine Earth, River Cafe, Rumba, Bodag Maliah at Sari Organik, and Westin, Nusa Dua which actually offers a super food menu.
