Surprise surprise... Although it has many competitors in this area, May Star maintains it's popularity by serving consistently yummy chinese food. Located in the top floor of Emporium Pluit Mall, May Star is the go-to-place when it comes to fancy chinese food and dim sum.
The place is very typical chinese restaurant, not a modern one but rather a fancy bling bling kind of place. Weird purple uniforms and patterns on tableware but not that bad. Service is bad and doesn't improve much,... The food is the main attraction here (as well as many other chinese restaurant)
Dimsums are great. Fresh seafood combined with great cookery produces high quality dimsums. The classics such as hakau and shumay are great. Classic, preditable but surprises you with sweetness of fresh seafood you can't experience in cheap dimsum place. The fried dimsums such as fried wonton and baked chasiu tart are also yummy.
For ala carte, price is on the high side with standard (if not small) portion. One of my fave is their seafood tofu claypot. Again, fresh seafood with perfectly fried japanese tofu in thick savoury oyster sauce, yummmm. Another recommended menu is their fried chicken which is small pieces of fried chicken with garlic. Very fragrant, moist but crunchy. Today, I just tried another yummy dish, pig feet claypot with chili. Taste like kungpao, a bit burnt aroma and tender pig feet and tendons. yummyyyy
May Star is a safe bet when you are craving for chinese food. Maybe it lacks the surprise you'd expect from paying such high price tag but it will not disappoint your taste buds.
